The timely intervention of the Tema Marine Police officers saved the life of a 35-year-old man who attempted to commit suicide in the Volta Lake.Albert Fia, a fuel station attendant at Kpando, who had jumped into the lake, ostensibly to drown was saved by the Tema Marine Police rescue team who quickly responded to a distress call by those who witnessed the incident.

Fia, a native of Kpodo in the Volta Region, told police after he had regained consciousnesss that he had been jilted by his girlfriend, hence his attempt to end his life.
He has since been handed over to his senior brother, Mr Banasis Fia, who is based in Accra, to monitor his movements.

Briefing The Mirror about the incident, Superintendent Joseph Antwi Ababio, the officer in charge of the Marine, Ports and Railway Police Station in Tema, said around 8:46 am last Saturday, the team had a distress call that a man had jumped into the Volta Lake and was being carried away by the current into deep waters.

Explaining further, he said, the man had travelled in a vessel from Old Akrade and it was after the vessel had berthed at the Senchi ferry landing site that Fia jumped into the lake.

According to Supt Ababio, the Marine Police rescue team including Corporal Sylvester Adatsi, a rescue swimmer, responded immediately and succeeded in rescuing Fia some minutes later.

He said it was after the rescued man had regained consciousness that he told the police that he had been cheated by his girlfriend, whom he had financially supported to travel outside the country.

According to Supt Ababio, the supposed girlfriend had firmly assured Fia that she would also support him to relocate to her abode, but she had reneged on her promise, hence his attempt to end his life.
He also said the police later contacted Fia’s brother and handed Fia over to him.
