Prez. Mahama’s affordable houses for sale

saglemi-housesThe Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing has indicated that hundreds of prospective home owners have requested to purchase housing units under Government’s Affordable Housing Project, the first phase of which was inspected by President Mahama a fortnight ago.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ministry, Abraham Otabil, told newsmen that a committee has been set up to determine, among others, the pricing for the newly inaugurated affordable houses at Seglemi in the Greater Accra Region.

President John Mahama cut the sod for the project in 2003. Two weeks ago, he inspected work on the 1,500 housing units at Ningo.

The inauguration constituted the first phase of the project, which is expected to produce 5,000 housing units for low and middle-income earners in the country.

There have been fears that the houses may be sold out to government officials and their cronies since they have more purchasing power than most of the middle-income earners who are the target of the project.

Mr Otabil said government is committed to ensuring that processes that lead to the purchase of the houses are dealt with.

“Demand for housing units is on the increase. It’s gone so far and the Ministry on a daily basis receives a number of requests from many prospective buyers.

“To say the least on a weekly basis, about 700 people express interest in occupying these facilities and I can tell you that on a daily basis not less than 50 people visit the Ministry in search of these affordable housing projects so it clearly indicates that there is a high demand for the affordable housing project.

As we speak, a committee is in place and they will come out with agreed prices on the pricing level and as soon as this is done, it will be made known to the public.”
