Govt to employ sign language interpreters at all public events

Photos-of-2015-SLI-Assessment22Government says it will incorporate sign language interpretation into all of its public events.

This follows the Ghana Federation of Disability making known its displeasure over the lack of a sign language interpreter at President Akufo-Addo’s media encounter on Tuesday. The President met some Ghanaian journalists at the Flagstaff House as he marked six months in office.

Speaking with TV3, Deputy Minister of Information Perry Okudzeto said he was unaware there was no sign language interpreter at the media encounter, adding that the issue would be adequately addressed. “What I know is that it’s a standard practice, so I’m actually surprised it was not done,” he said. “It’s something that we will take onboard as government.

If it’s something that must be done at all public events, we’ll take it onboard and it will be discussed at the very highest level,” he assured reporter Catherine Frimpongmaa.
