6106940811034_6850267817059President Akufo-Addo is under intense pressure to initiate a thorough probe into the unfolding scandal at the Electoral Commission (EC).

Joy News’ has learnt, forces within the New Patriotic Party, other political parties and civil society groups want the President to take steps to restore public confidence in the EC following ongoing media war between Chairperson, Charlotte Osei and two of her deputies – Georgina Opoku Amankwaah and Amadu Sulley.

The media has become battle turf, where the three Commissioners have been throwing jabs at each other in a string of serious allegations.

First, some nameless staff at the EC petitioned the President, Nana Akufo-Addo, to remove their Chair, claiming she lacks administrative competence.

The EC chairperson Charlotte Osei in her response, rather hinted, some persons at the Commission could be the brain behind the plot to have her impeached.

She accused the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Operations, Amadu Sulley for bagging some ¢6 million from political parties without the knowledge of the finance department of the Commission while alleging that, her deputy in charge of Corporate Resources, Georgina Opoku Amankwaah illegally signed contracts worth GHS40m.

However, both Commissioners, have separately denied the accusations by Charlotte Osei.

The President’s campaign manager in the 2016 elections, Peter Mac Manu, is calling for the establishment of “a multi-dimensional or quasi-judiciary body to investigate things that are coming out” at the EC.

General Secretary of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Mutala Mohammed, also noted the implosion has “soiled” the “credibility and sanctity” of the once revered elections management body.

He called for “a need for all these Commissioners to step aside for an independent commission to be set to investigate the allegations.”

Meanwhile, Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), George Lawson, said the party is just observing how events are unfolding.

The NDC’s group in Parliament has already served notice, they will use every avenue to stop any attempt to remove the Chair of the EC.

Election observer group, Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), led by former Director of Elections at the EC, Albert Kofi Arhin, is calling for a cease fire in the media confrontations.

He also supported calls for investigations into the allegations the three Commissioners are jabbing up at each other.
