The government of Ghana has officially declared that the Tamale Sports Stadium is will be named after Ghana’s late Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama.
In commemoration of the 5th anniversary of the death of the former Vice President who served in the erstwhile NPP administration, the 20,000 capacity Tamale Sports Stadium is set to be named after him.
According to President Akufo-Addo, the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama “had so much to do with it (Tamale Sports Stadium), and I think it will be a proper monument to him, testimony to his contribution.”
President Akufo-Addo made this known on Monday, 30th October 2017, when the Aliu Mahama Foundation paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency to inform the President of the series of activities being held to commemorate the 5th Anniversary of the passing of the late Vice President.
Describing the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama as a “colleague and a very valuable member of the team that worked with former President J.A. Kufuor”, President Akufo-Addo noted that “his premature departure continues always to be a very emotional matter for us.”
One of the major reasons for the construction of the Tamale Sports Stadium was to give the people of the Northern Region a good feel of football associated with the various national teams most especially the Black Stars and other sporting activities.
There was general hullabaloo that surrounded the construction of the US$20 million multipurpose Tamale Sports Stadium in 2006 ahead of the 2008 African Cup of Nations which Ghana was the host nation but the late Alhaji Aliu Mahama who was the Vice President at the time observed that it was apt the region benefited from the facility.
