World Cup 2018: Race for the Golden Boot, The 5 Top Scorers After Round 2

By on

Several strikers have lit up the World Cup group stages so far, with England’s Harry Kane currently leading the way with five goals.

However, the Spurs man has Cristiano Ronaldo and Romelu Lukaku breathing down his neck, with both men on four goals each.

Below is a closer look at the top five contenders for the Golden Boot at this summer’s tournament.

5. Diego Costa (Spain) – 3 Goals

Despite being as low as fifth in the list, Diego Costa is only two goals away from catching the leader of the pack, Harry Kane.

His physical prowess is proving key for Spain, as it adds a different dimension to Fernando Hierro’s side.

Costa scored a brace in the opening game against Portugal, with both his goals proving vital as his side clinched a 3-3 draw. He added to his tally with the only goal of the game against a very resolute Iran team.

4. Denis Cheryshev (Russia) – 3 Goals

Former Real Madrid midfielder Denis Cheryshev made the ultimate substitute appearance as his two goals from off the bench helped Russia to open their campaign with an impressive 5-0 victory against Saudi Arabia.

His performance earned him a deserved start in the next game against Egypt, with he justified with another goal as his side beat Egypt 3-1.

3. Romelu Lukaku (Belgium) – 4 Goals

The race for top spot in Group H has been made even more exciting by the goal scoring race between Harry Kane and Romelu Lukaku.

Manchester United ‘s Belgian striker scored two goals in the space of six minutes in his country’s opener against Panama, before doubling his tally for the tournament with a superbly taken brace against Tunisia in a 5-2 victory.

Kane and Lukaku will be competing to establish themselves as the leading contender for the Golden Boot when England meet Belgium in their final group game on Thursday.

2. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) – 4 Goals

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo got Portugal’s World Cup campaign off to a perfect start with his dazzling performance against Spain in the opening round of games.

He opened his tournament in perfect fashion when he converted a penalty after just four minutes against Spain, before striking just before halftime and then curling in a stunning free kick in the 88th minute to salvage a point for his side.

In the next game against Morocco, he scored in the fourth minute of the match for the second time in a row and now sits just one goal behind Harry Kane after two games.

1. Harry Kane (England) – 5 Goals

Harry Kane propelled himself to the top of the World Cup goal scoring charts with a fantastic hattrick as England beat Panama 6-1 on Monday.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino recently labelled Kane as ‘the best striker in the world’ and it’s clear to see why.

The Spurs striker built on his brace against Tunisia in the opening game by becoming the first England captain to score a hattrick since Alan Shearer in 1999.
