The Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), is to flush out floating commercial vehicles as part of measures to ensure discipline on the major roads of the Metropolis.
The Assembly is constituting a taskforce made up of representatives of the transport unions, TMA metro guards and the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to embark on the exercise.
Floating vehicles are taxis and ‘trotros’ that had not registered to operate from any of the recognized bus terminals (lorry stations) in the area and therefore picked and off loaded passengers at unauthorized places.
Mr Frank Asante, TMA Public Relations Officer, disclosing this to the Ghana News Agency, said passengers must desist from patronizing such vehicles because due to the haste with which they operated, they could not ensure the safety and comfort of passengers.
Mr Asante indicated that drivers at the various stations had complained bitterly to Mr Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive about the adverse effect of floating drivers on the operations.
He indicated that according to them, commuters refused to patronize vehicles at the stations because these floaters were available even in the middle of streets and all unauthorized places.
He stated that the taskforce when inaugurated, would have the mandate to arrest and prosecute both floating drivers and passengers to deter others.
The PRO announced that approval had been given by the Assembly for maintenance work to be carried out at the main station
Bitumen, he said, would be used to pave the ground to prevent dust and mud.
He informed that phase one of the Community One Site 2/20 lorry terminal had been completed adding that work done included fencing and floor preparation.
