Speaker summons MPs for emergency sitting next week

The Speaker of Parliament, Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, has recalled Members of Parliament from recess to help consider what he says is an “urgent Parliamentary business.”

Parliament is expected to sit for five days beginning 24th to 28th September 2018.

“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by order 42 (3) of the Standing Orders of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Right Honourable Professor Aaron Michael Oquaye, Speaker of Parliament, do hereby direct that Parliament shall, notwithstanding anything do the contrary, be recalled from recess to sit from Monday, the 24th day of September 2018, at ten o’clock in the forenoon each day, at Parliament House, Accra, to consider among others, some urgent Parliamentary business,” a memo to the MPs and sighted.

It is currently not clear why the MPs are being recalled, but there are speculations that they have some urgent loans on their desk to approve for government.

There are speculations also that the MPs are being recalled to enable them to review, for the second time, the new Ameri deal which they failed to pass before going on recess.

The Minority had raised concerns over the new agreement claiming it is not in the best interest of the country.

The parliamentarians have been on recess since July 27, 2018.

Before going on recess, the House deferred the Privileges Committee’s report that allegedly recommended sanctions for Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong who made comments against the House found to be contemptuous.

The Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu explained that the sanction was deferred to make sure Parliament recessed without any tensions.

He said the House had a pre-sitting meeting and decided that it wanted to leave on a good note and come back to consider the matter.
