The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA), has acquired land at Eshiem near Takoradi to be developed into a public cemetery because the current one in use at Takoradi is full.
In view of this, the assembly is urging residents of Takoradi to bury their dead in Sekondi, as it works to get the new place in shape.
The STMA has paid GH¢50,000 for the land measuring 38.12 acres.
The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Chief Executive, Mr Anthony K. K. Sam, announced this at the Second Ordinary Meeting of the third session of the assembly.
He said the assembly was working to have the new place developed quickly in order not to create difficulty for residents of the city.
Mr Sam said even though there were cemeteries in the satellite communities near the metropolis that were not being managed by the STMA, there was pressure on the public cemeteries in Takoradi and Sekondi.
“The pressure on the public cemeteries in the twin city has arisen because they have been managed very well and their environment and facilities kept clean,” he said.
He said the Sekondi Public Cemetery had space and, therefore, people interested in burying their dead at the public cemetery, could go there or make use of the cemeteries in the surrounding communities.
The STMA chief executive said he recognised the importance people accorded the dead and so the Eshiem project would be well designed and developed to meet the expectation of the public.
Mr Sam also spoke about the assembly’s engagement in the Ghana Urban Management Pilot Project (GUMPP) which would end officially in December.
The GUMPP is geared towards infrastructural development in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis.
He said efforts were being made to fully utilise structures completed under the project, especially the Kokompe Skilled Training Centre for artisans.
