World Teachers’ Day: Teachers must be treated with respect – NAGRAT

By on

As the world marks International Teacher’s Day today, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) is calling for urgent attention to the myriad of challenges confronting teachers in the country.

The President of the Association, Angel Carbonu in an interview said among other things, there must be urgent steps to end what he described as casualization of teachers.

He bemoaned the high incident of teachers being hired and fired at will especially by proprietors of private schools.

According to him, such practice is unacceptable and must not be allowed to continue to fester.

Mr. Carbonu also expressed regret over the delay in payment of teacher’s salaries among other benefits.

The situation where teachers are recruited and as and when proprietors like, they dispose of the teachers should be a thing of the past and cannot be accepted in the new dispensation that we find ourselves. There are a lot of hanging challenges, teachers salary arrears and other arrears that have not been paid, improper placement of teachers on the scale are all challenges that we think that authorities must address as we go forward, Mr. Carbonu said in the interview.

World Teachers’ Day aims to focus on “appreciating, assessing and improving the educators of the world” and to provide an opportunity to consider issues related to teachers and teaching.
