Waking up in the middle of the night can be annoying, but what is more irritating is when you are not able to fall back to sleep again. You are not the only one suffering from this problem. Waking up in the middle of the night is a common problem. But have you ever thought why this happens and how can you stop it?
Here are 5 common reasons which may be causing hindrance in your good night sleep:
Your room might be the reason
The place where you are sleeping might be disturbing your slumber. The first stage of sleep is the lightest and people are prone to get up easily at this time. Physical issues like too hot or cold room, slamming of a door or light from an unknown source can easily disturb your sleep at night. For a good night’s sleep, your room should be dark, comfortably cool, and quiet.
You have anxiety
If you are suffering from anxiety then also you might find it difficult to sleep peacefully at night. Several anxiety-induced issues like a galloping heartbeat or nightmares can rouse you. Some people may even experience nocturnal panic attacks-a transient episodes of intense panic that can wake up a person from their deep slumber.
You have an overactive thyroid gland
The thyroid gland controls the function of several other organs. When this gland is overactive it creates too much of the hormone thyroxine, which can have ripple effects on different systems of our body. Trouble in sleeping, an increased heart rate, excessive sweating, anxiety, tremors are some of the common symptoms of an overactive thyroid. Talk to your doctor, he might suggest some medication to help you get over this problem.
You have restless legs syndrome
People suffering from Restless legs syndrome might experience uncomfortable sensations in their legs and an irresistible urge to move them. These symptoms are common during the evening or at night when you are sleeping. Sometimes other underlying issues like iron deficiency can also lead to RLS. Home remedies to soothe your muscles, like warm baths, can help you to get good sleep if you are suffering from this problem.
You’ve got sleep apnea
Sleep apnea, which is a common medical condition among adults and old age people can also disturb your sleep. This disorder slows or stops your breathing while you are asleep. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine is the most common treatment for sleep apnea and can help you with better good night sleep.
Try to make small tweaks in your night routine to see any signs of changes. Eat at least two hours before going to bed, do not watch TV or mobile phone before going to bed. If nothing helps then consult your doctor to get relief from this problem.
